Kottakkal Arya Vaidya Sala is a renowned Ayurvedic healthcare institution located in Calicut, Kerala, established in 1902 by Vaidyaratnam P. S. Varier. The campus architecture embodies the principles of traditional Kerala design, with sloping Mangalore-tiled roofs, deep verandahs, timber detailing, and naturally ventilated spaces that respond effectively to the region’s tropical climate. The clean rooms & Tissue culture Labs for near extinct medicinal herbs was constructed by NVA. The buildings are arranged around landscaped open spaces, creating a calm and restorative environment that complements Ayurvedic healing practices. Constructed using locally sourced materials and a restrained architectural vocabulary, the institution successfully integrates cultural heritage, climate-responsive design, and functional healthcare planning, making it one of India’s most iconic examples of traditional institutional architecture.
